REWIND! Recap of Summer Careers and Resume Workshop

On July the 9th, we hosted our second Careers and Resume workshop. Rows of chairs and tables were set up, and the refreshments were ready for grabs. The executives anxiously waited for participants to arrive. The afternoon began with Pauline Chong, as she gave a brief introduction on CCCYC. Following, the group participated in several icebreakers. Everyone returned to their seats in laughter and smiles.

Pauline returned to the stage and spoke in details about resumes. She emphasized the importance of highlighting only the applicant’s skills and experiences that are relevant to the position. Using key words from the job description and numbers for specification, it can make your resume much more effective in getting that job!

Kelvin Choi then spoke about how to effectively look for a job and write authentic, customized cover letters that stand out. He gave a myriad of resources and strategies to maximize one’s job search. Using humorous and personal examples, he got his point across that cover letters, like resumes, need to be customized for each position.

The final presentation was led by CCCYC president, Lena Song, who gave many pointers on having a successful interview. The group then had a chance to ask questions. It was later led to a short discussion, where participants were able to share not only questions, but their own knowledge and experience in interviews. Some topics included: appropriate attires, timing of arrival, and possible responses to questions the interviewer may ask.

With all the knowledge imbibed, it was then time to put it into action. Participants were told in advance that they had the opportunity to bring their resumes to get it reviewed by CCCYC executives that already in the working force. It was also a time for the entire group to network and socialize with each other, and grab a last bite of the refreshments.

But… the learning does not stop here! We encourage everyone, whether you attended or not, to look around for resources and to make the preparations that will help you get the job –be it asking adults to revise your resume or conducting mock interviews with a friend to gain more confidence—the learning never stops!
